The Custom house is situated in Penarth marina overlooking Cardiff Bay. It is a building with spectacular quality - steeped in history and oozing character. This regal building was the setting for port officials to go about their business for well over a century. This beautiful venue is the home of two restaurants. The downstairs restaurant El Puerto is renowned as possibly the best brasserie out side of London and La Marina the upstairs restaurant as one of the top fish restaurants, both offer a collection of fresh fish from local waters as well as further a field. Both restaurants also offer a fantastic display of local Welsh meat, from Welsh Black beef, to locally farmed Lambs The entire team at the custom House Prides them selves in the freshness and quality of all ingredients used.

The Custom House is a privately owned family run business with over 50 year's experience in the catering industry with previous restaurants world renowned Champers La Monde and the Brasserie based in Cardiff town centre.

Food and Wine

The Custom House incorporates an extensive bar and terrace which over look Cardiff bay. The terrace in the summer also lends itself to an outside dining area which benefits from the cooling sea breeze as well as a beautiful location on a sunny day to enjoy a bottle of wine.

Both restaurants in the Custom House boast extensive menus prepared daily depending on what fresh local ingredients are delivered on the day. To accompany the perfect meal the Custom House also boasts the largest cellar in Wales offering anything from the finest Bordeaux’s to our more straight forward Spanish House Rioja. So no matter the budget the Custom House's cellar caters for all.

For after the meal the Custom House also holds many of the World's finest French and Spanish brandys as well as an extensive range of vintage ports and armanjacs to suit everyones pallet.

Our Chef

Born in Wales Trefor Jones brings vast experience with him from years of working in kitchens on the continent. He controls a 30 strong brigade of Chefs who are constantly striving to improve. His vast knowledge of both European style cuisine and local Welsh delicacy are widely evident in both restaurants at the Custom House. His training whilst working with Michelle Roux and other notable chefs stands him in good sted to deal with all the challenges the custom house offers.

In Trefor's illustrious career he has had the honor of cooking for Her Majesty the Queen, The Prime minister of China as well numerous other Head of states and A-list celebrities. Trefor's now plays a key role in designing new dishes and menus in the custom house as well as still spending time cooking in the el Puerto Kitchen. Trefor prides himself in using only the finest local ingredients all handpicked by himself.
